Respect & trauma

Promoting peace and dealing with trauma

Underlying all workshops is the idea that differences of opinion, in background, gender, culture, or religion should be respected. Arguments are normal, even useful sometimes, but children are made aware of how to resolve them without resorting to violence or discrimination. This makes the program suitable for countries coping with violence or a history of conflict.

The Respect+ program, has an additional focus on trauma counseling.

Teachers are taught to recognize trauma in children and how to recall, relive, share, and process a child’s traumatic experiences. Clearly a teacher is not a therapist, but the workshops do provide them with an opportunity to help a child deal with trauma not as a solitary grief but as a shared experience.
